By: Stephen Baughn It was just last week that I addressed a growing trend among many golf courses. That trend for all intents and purposes does not single out one particular golf course. In fact, it is a growing trend among many golf courses that are poorly managed and simply out of touch with reality. You will see below with Duran Golf's commitment to our Service Personnel with their new discount program that some courses are truly trying to stay in touch with reality.
There are still many golf courses who feel as though the economy bouncing back is right around the corner. It is because of this that many courses have ignored the fact that many people have simply given up the game. I haven’t given up, but I certainly have cut back, playing half as many rounds in 2009 as I did in 2008 and 2007. This trend that I am referring to is that of courses announcing specials, but making so many stipulations to their specials and discounts that you get frustrated and go somewhere else. I understand the need to maximize revenue, wanting to sell the most expensive tee time slots first before offering discounts. However, by advertising a discount, then making stipulations on that discount, you alienate the very people wishing to play your course. After all, some money is better than no money. Shortly after my article last week, we received an e-mail from the GM at Duran Golf Club in Viera, FL. The great thing about their new discount they are offering isn’t just the type of discount or who it affects; they apply it to everyone from all over the country wishing to come to Brevard County and play their great course and give it a shot. Brevard County has an enormous veteran and active duty military population. Approximately 21% of the population in Brevard County over the age of 18 is a Veteran of the United States Military. That represents somewhere in the neighborhood of 80,000 people or more. If you add the active duty military at Patrick AFB, the number increases significantly. It is important that we as Americans take care of those who have given their lives, their families’ lives, and time to ensure that we continue to have the freedoms in this country that we do.
